The Met Office has issued a weather warning for New Year’s Day, with snow set to hit the UK as 2026 begins. The yellow warning for snow and ice will be in force from 6am on Thursday, 1 January to 11.59pm on Friday, 2 January, covering northern parts of Scotland.

Flood alerts have been issued as Britain braces for two storms to hit this week bringing heavy rain, gale force winds and a chance of snow. Weather officials have put in place 11 flood alerts which could affect residents in several regions across the country.
Snow may fall as far south as Brighton in the New Year, with temperatures set to plummet below freezing. Weather maps generated by WX Charts on Boxing Day show snow in the Scottish Highlands at 6pm on January 2. Up to an inch of snow is expected to fall in Scotland per hour at 6am two days later.
It follows warmer conditions over the weekend following Christmas Day, with temperatures of between 5C to 9C. But the mercury will take a dip as next week begins, with lows of 1C in Glasgow during the day. On Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will drop to 0C and below in the North of England and Scotland at night time.
Another “severe” weather warning for “persistent, heavy” snow has been issued for parts of the UK after temperatures plunged to a new record low. The amber warning covers swathes of Wales and the West Midlands, and will remain in place between 12pm today and 9am on Friday.
The Met Office has put yellow weather warnings in place for most parts of the UK today. Almost all of the country, except for the North East and Scotland has a warning in place for strong winds – that are forecast to start about noon until the same time on Monday.
