A rare dinosaur skull will soon go on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, but the fossil will not be on view for long.
The finding in Stelvio National Park, near the Swiss border, that was unveiled Tuesday consists of thousands of fossilized footprints more than 200 million years old. The tracks, some of them stretching for hundreds of yards, are so well preserved that marks of toes and claws are visible.
A golden era in dinosaur science is driving this fascination with dinosaurs. Around 1,400 dinosaur species are now known from more than 90 countries, with the rate of discovery accelerating in the last two decades. The year 2025 has so far seen the discovery of 44 new dinosaur species – nearly one a week.
A 92-foot-long dinosaur found by construction workers in China in 1998 may be the largest of it’s kind according to research published in July in the journal Scientific Reports.
